March 13, 201511 yr I have a donor engine. Can I do the following: Remove the oil pump, inspect it, reseal it and put it on my turbo engine? Remove the rocker assembly, pull the HLA's, soak them in carb cleaner, then an ultrasonic bath, prime them, reinstall them in the rockers and put that assembly on my turbo engine? Everything compatible?
March 13, 201511 yr yup, youre good. if you can find a forester s in the junkyard, swipe the oil cooler too
March 13, 201511 yr Author I pulled the HLA's out of the donor. They are pumped up nicely. Should I still soak them in gunk or call it good and just install them? Pulled the donor oil pump out as well. To what degree should I pull this apart so I can soak it and reseal it? Pull out all the springs and whatever else there is to do a total disassemble? I'm in no hurry to get this done at this time.
March 14, 201511 yr Pull the oil pump right down, remove the shaft and rotors.Make sure on reassembly the shaft's oil seal is replaced, no matter how good it looks! If they leak they suck air... You can also put a spacer behind the oil pressure relief valve spring, only needs to be 2-3mm spacer to be effective.Sounds like you've got a good set of HLA's in there. Try your best to keep as much oil pressure up to them as possible, if they're ticking that's when they're wearing out...CheersBennie
March 15, 201511 yr It's pretty easy to take the lifters ALL the way apart and THEN clean all the tiny checkballs and springs(I used a gallon bucket of gunk carb cleaner ,the one with the basket in it) , re assemble and pump up(my chilton said they should only have 4-5 mm play, but mine had ALOT more than that and they are fine). Also on the oil pump do take it ALL the way apart at this time!! they are pretty hard to find as best I can tell, so while you have the opportunity, make it like new!! you will not regret it .I did these exact things on my donor EA 82 which came from a clean looking 89 with 60,000 miles, except the oil looked like sludge ,apparently the tranny was out ... now , it runs too quiet to hear ANY lifter noise!!!!!!!! Good luck!!
