What is the silver electrical component up against the back of the cab on the transmission tunnel in my BRAT?

try disconnect it and see if your lights work around the car. I think it has something to do with if a light bulb dies, sets something off to come up on the dash.i

Stop light check relay.

 

It's a dual coil relay wired into both brake light circuits.

If both bulbs are good, both coils are energized.

If one bulb burns out, the good side of the circuit causes the relay to move, making the contact for the "Stop Lamp" light on the dash cluster to light.

Never experienced it, but I heard a rumor that if both lights burn out then the light will not illuminate either.  It only comes on with ONE light burned out.

This is true and is explained in the owner's manual.
