Brat backfire, and no tach

Featured Replies

Been having bad backfires with my weber, and the car will almost die if floored from idle. This causes the car to be gutless in anything besides 4wd lo.

Video:

Good parts are 0:00-0:30  1:20-1:30 and then 2:00 to the end. The shot of the shifter is me going into 4wd hi, after that it dies, but I think that's partly because my u joints are crap.

As you can see my tach is broken. Can you guys please post pics of how your tach is wired to the engine? I have this plug, which is in a sheath with the shiny connector beneath it. https://i296.photobucket.com/albums/mm200/ComatoseLlama/0623150959_zps4hnmfo9i.jpg?t=1435798642

Bonus shots of the luscious interior.

I would start with testing your alternator to see if it's actually putting out 16v+

Would that be bad?

Yes over charging the electrical system F's things up pretty bad over time. You could ruin your battery or fry electrical components. It should be at about 14v + or - 0.2v if you put a multimeter on the battery giving it a little gas about 2000rpms. It could be you have a short too. I had a brat that had a short when you tried to use the blower fan the tac would go to zero, fuel gauge would go to max, and so would the alt gauge.

I wouldn't doubt that. Wires I installed caught on fire the other week and fixed some electrical problems. Will check it tomorrow

The connector could be for the Hitachi carb. Fed the choke and Idle Stop Solenoid power. Does it have Blue wires along with Black ones?

Make sure you didn't get the plug leads on the wrong plugs. That has happened many times.

Ignition and tach wires come out of the body harness under the coil.

Black/White is ignition feed, goes to coil +.

Yellow is Tach feed, goes to coil -.

The wires from the disty go on the coil in the same manner.
