excuse my ignorance

Featured Replies

i have never claimed to be mechanically literate so i am not ashamed to ask this question of the group...can you explain to me the different types of soobs you refer to on this board, ea81, ea82, etc. i have no idea what is being spoken of when these terms are used. how do you know what is what? i have a 90 loyale what would it be? thanks for the help. try not to laugh too loud at my ignorance.

ea81 and ea82 refer to the different generations of subarus and their engines, I am not sure about the exact years, someone will chime in...I just wanted to say ask as many questions as you want, thats why everyone is here...and remember: there are no stupid questions, just stupid people :D

yeah i was the same way 2 days ago so no worries. EA-81 is the earlier model 80ies from 80-84 i believe and after that it was ea-82 till like 88 i think?? i dunno. from what i hear the ea-81 is better for offroading because it is less maintanence and much easier to fix. The ea-82 has a problem breaking heads on it which is easy to repair but they leak a lot too and some other stuff... The ea-82s were more powerful though. hehe thats what i know from like the last week of research

oh was it only the wagons with ea-82s? hmm so since im gettin a hatch now i could get a hatch all the way up till then and stil have an ea-81?

all cars with the newer squarish body style have ea82s, all the cars with the old more rounded body style have ea81s

there are ea82 wagons, 3door coupes, and 4door sedans

there are ea81 brats, hatchbacks, coupes, wagons, and sedans

EA-71:

EA-81s:

EA-82s:

EA81 (Gen 2):

80-84 Wagons, Coupes, Sedans

82-87 Brats

80-89 Hatchback

EA82 (Gen 3):

85-94 Loyale's (Wagon, 3 Door Coupe, Sedan)

The confusing part is that this is really a reference to the engine's they used *most* of the time. There are examples of Gen 2's that have the EA71 engine, and there is a single example of a Gen 1 with the EA81 (81 Brat GL). All Gen 3's have some form of the EA82. No Gen 3 ever came with an EA81.

Gen 1's had several engines as well, including the EA63, EA71, and EA81, and if you go back far enough you will get into weird smaller engines like the 360 cars and trucks had.

The Justy is also an "old Gen" car, but shares nothing in common with the rest of these - sporting a 3 cylinder transverse monted engine, and completely different body and interrior. There are actually two Gens of Justys as well as they changed the body style a bit in the 90's.
