July 24, 201510 yr hi there. Just picked up a EJ25 DOHC out of a 99 forester. I am now looking for an ECU and complete wiring harness. I had a few questions however. I am going to be using a manual transmission from a Volkswagen with this so do I need the manual ECU? If so, I have been having a heck of a time finding one.. Can you adapt an automatic? Secondly. Is there any difference in the wiring harness from the SOHC and DOHC? Thanks for all of your replies!
July 24, 201510 yr so do I need the manual ECU? NO either on will do. the ECUs aree the same, the harnesses are different. Is there any difference in the wiring harness from the SOHC and DOHC? depends on the year. 99s they are different. you want a harness from 95 - 98. check out the retro-fit forum.
July 24, 201510 yr Author Thanks so much. I have been told that there is a ECU specifically for manual transmissions. I will take a look at that retro-fit forum. Would it require much modification?
July 24, 201510 yr 99 forester came with an SOHC 2.5. If you have a DOHC (4 cams total) engine then you need an ECU from a 96-98 Legacy or 98 Forester. No specific ECU for MT vs AT. The difference is in the wire harness.
July 24, 201510 yr hi there. Just picked up a EJ25 DOHC out of a 99 forester. He already said it but that's not a vehicle that has ever existed in the US. 99 Forester is SOHC EJ25 (the first year of the SOHC EJ25 - it is like 2000-2004 EJ25's) 98 Forester is DOHC - the only year forester with DOHC - it is the same engine installed in 1997-1999 Outbacks and GT's (and 1996 automatic Outbacks). The two engines are not compatible electronically - get the wiring harness and ECU for whichever engine you have. For that matter any 1996-1999 legacy even with an EJ22 will work for wiring/ECU of a 1998 forester - they are interchangeable plug and play those two engines.
