July 29, 201510 yr My rear window blew out and I need to replace it - cost of window is $502.86 & rear tailgate @ junkyard is about $90 - so has anyone replaced the rear tailgate? How do I do it?
July 29, 201510 yr Did it years ago with a Dodge Colt. Takes 2 people. Hinges at the top and probably a wire or two needs disconnected. Guessing all you need is a 12mm socket. It's somewhat heavy and awkward so remember, 2 people .
July 29, 201510 yr at least 2 people - 3 would be better. (at least for me it would) one person with the tools - 2 to support the tailgate (one on each side). check for any/all wiring, washer hoses, etc., that may need to be disconnected - not sure how wiring was run on the later models, but on my 1990 the wiring was run up under the headliner panel - took a bit of work to get it down enough to unplug connectors. Once wiring is disconnected, unbolt the support struts (this is where your help comes in - to support the tailgate when these are disconnected) then unbolt the hinges up top. Installation is the reverse. Hinges first, then support struts, then reconnecting wiring and such
July 29, 201510 yr Yes, I think the wrecking yard is the best approach. +1 on advise about it being a 2 or 3 man job. Tail gates are really heavy and cumbersome.
July 29, 201510 yr If the tailgate-hinge is bolted on using shims, then make sure to have some extra shims on hand. That would help to get the new tailgate aligned properly.
