Gauge cluster swap question;

I would like to swap the full gauge cluster (oil pressure, voltmeter, etc) from my 87 GL into my 93 Loyale. I'm wondering if the appropriate connections are still there in the dash for the additional gauges or if I'll have to run my own lines/grab certain plugs from the GL.

 

I'm also curious of the speedometer will be accurate going from a 5 speed dual range car into a 5 speed front wheel drive car. Is 5spd fwd 3.9 final drive?

Got the gauge cluster out of the GL. Guess I'll find out tomorrow for myself.

I did this for my 93 Loyale.  It had only idiot light for oil and no voltmeter.  All of my earlier Loyales and GLs had all meters.   you need to get the oil pressure sender for the engine, and move the wire from the switch sender.  The same wire works for the signal.  The voltmeter is just wired into the circuitry, so it will just work.

Any suggestions on running the old GL odometer *up* to match the loyale? I took it apart to see how easy or hard it would be to just swap the odometer assemblies, but it does not look like something simple.

I could run it on a drill but that will probably take a week, I have to advance it some 13,xxx miles....=\

Yes, a drill will take forever. A Dremel however, will not. Huge RPM difference. Depending on the Dremel speed, 13K should only take 5 or 6 hours I would think. Done it before, but now I just crack them open and change them. It's a bit of work, but faster than the alternatives.

I will check out the dremel I have at work. Didn't think of that. It does spin pretty fast.

I had the circuit board off on the speedo side and the plastic cover off the front. I couldn't even manage to get the speedo needle off, though I didn't spend *too* much time looking. Maybe it's held in with a roll pin? Either way I put it all back together and gave up on the idea of taking it apart. I'll just run it up with something. 13k at 130mph shouldn't take too long, if the dremel spins fast enough to get the needle up around there.

When I swapped mine, I swapped the speedometer. The black center plastic cap pulls off. There is a nut under it. Not sure why I bothered, it has a different engine and transmission in it now anyway. The miles are on the body, and wheel bearings. Resale won't likely be a problem, I've never sold one of these cars. Except vary rusted out bodies to a scrap metal dealer. ...
