Neep help, my good friends.

Featured Replies

HI Everyone,

My first time to post.

2002 Outback Wagon with a 2.5L engine. 4 cyl.

My belts shredded so had to replace them.

But the car won't start now.

Replaced the battery. Still won't.

I only get 2 functions from the battery: the dinging sound with the key in the ignition and I can lock and unlock the doors with the functions on the door.

But my remote won't work, and the interior lights don't come on.

Everything is charged up.

A mystery.

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Thank you.

Bri

which belt/s did you change?

alt?

AC?

timing?

recheck the battery connections.

what all did you disconnect to change the belt.?

try this,

disconnect the battery

put the key in the ignition

turn the key to start and let go

connect the battery.

see if that helps.

I replaced the alt and a/c.

I disconnected nothing. I loosened some stuff: the alternator. But I retightened it when I adjusted the tightener bolt.

I'll try your suggestion.

Thanks.

did you ever see or hear any sparks during the process?

did you disconnect the battery?

does the engine turn over when you turn the key?

cranks but no start?

or no crank?

does the crank pulley wobble when you try to start the car?

and what shredded your belts?

My friends, good news. I had the battery tested and it came out good. While I was at the auto parts store I spoke with a mechanic who told me to check all my fuses. I did and it was main one! The 100 amp fuse that powers the alt, the battery and the other fuses. It was broken. Bought it and voila! We're back on the road.

By the way, what do you think of belt dressing? Good idea or no?

If you use it sparingly its fine, and keeps the belt from drying out and cracking.

Do NOT use belt dressing to try to stop a belt from squealing. If it's squeaking its worn out or loose and should be tightened or replaced.

I blew the 100 amp main before too. The big fat wire that connects with the ring terminals on the alt, when you unhook the alt, if those ring terminals touch ground at all it will blow that fuse. Belt dressing from what I can tell tends to work better on v belts, and doesn't work very well on serpentine belts.
