Has anyone trashed the stock '86 GL headlights and cobbed in some sort of aftermarket halogen headlamps?  ANYTHING is better than what these are.   I've taken them apart, cleaned them, etc. They are too far gone to make better.

Turbone successfully retrofitted H.I.D. projectors, inside the original EA82 Halogen Headlamps, with Awesome Results, here is his Writeup:

Just read what he did.  I'm not wanting to fuss at all with the original lights.  Not caring what it looks like either, I'm just going to hit a deer, moose, elk, lion, sheep or bear again.  I'd prefer round lamps by far.

I understand that the Search function on the New USMB's system really doesn't work well; however, usually remember the most important / useful threads, in order to share them here. 

 

 

Just read what he did.  I'm not wanting to fuss at all with the original lights.  Not caring what it looks like either, I'm just going to hit a deer, moose, elk, lion, sheep or bear again.  I'd prefer round lamps by far.

 

I was about to obtain a set of LADM (Latin American Domestic Market) Specs' set of Headlamps for the EA82, which are Plastic Housing with Glass lense, using a brighter H4 Halogen Bulb, instead the USDM Specs' Headlamps that are on my "BumbleBeast" which are, Metal housing with Glass lense, using the lousy 9004 Halogen bulb; but the Headlamps were alright...

So, what I did, was to Retrofit Dual Beam (Lo / Hi) H.I.D. at 55 watts, on yellowish 5000K colour, and that setup has been working alright since 2008, flawlessly so far...

My H.I.D.'s are fitted directly to the Headlamps without any modification, I know that some people dislike that setup, especially for the Glare that might blind incoming traffic, however, the Low beam has a sharp cut which prevents from blinding incoming traffic, if Properly adjusted; also the Glass lenses keeps transparency at the best,all the time; unlike plastic lenses that becomes yellowish with age, loosing transparency, which provides much more Glare; and people nowadays, are using the Bright LED bars, which provides a very Dangerous glare... I rather prefer H.I.D.'s on Stock Headlamps.

 

Not all H.I.D.'s came on Projectors; there are some cars, including certain Subaru imprezas, that came with H.I.D.'s from factory, installed on Headlamps.

I obviously need parts that are readily available. Your setup doesn't help me..... Although a nice setup.

I can't put a lot into this project. HID would be nice but I'll have to settle for the same style bulb as in there now. I need new reflectors mainly.

An easy and cheap option for upgrade, could be to use 100W / 80W Halogen 9004 Bulbs.

instead the Regular 65W / 45W ones, but that will require upgraded "Ceramic" Sockets:

I used to drive my Subie with 9104 "Rally" Bulbs with longitudinal elements, instead the regular 9004 with Transversal elements. as you can see, here:

If the Reflectors are Rusty or dark, you can "Bake" the Headlamp assembly, untill the Glue that holds the glass lense, becomes soft enough to allow the removal of such lense without breaking it; you might follow the instructions by Turbone, on the link posted above; then, you can glue a sheet of aluminium foil, to the Darkened reflectors, using the shiniest side to be exposed, so you'll have shiny reflectors once again; then you'll need to re-glue the glass lense to the metal housing.

I've done all this before.  Not interested in doing it again.  Not interested in fixing the existing lights.  I was looking to see if anyone has use non Subaru headlights in their place.  Maybe something like a Hella 90mm module or such.

Oldest Son has an '06 GMC Canyon. Those headlight assemblies are a very close match to the EA82 ones. Not sure on anything other than "It looks like it will fit".

Side marker lights will be the main issue as far as looks go, but shape is very similar as far as fitting the opening.

The wiring for the headlights is so long that they lose current after a while.

Have you thought about installing new relays in the engine bays.

Use the existing plugs on the back of the headlights to trigger relays, but then power the relays directly from the battery to the headlights.

I was thinking that too but everything checked out with my multimeter.  Maybe I'll just find some clean replacements and go that route.  These on there are shot.

Multimeter won't show this problem. Similar to why a relay needs to be put onto starter motors after so many years.

 

You could go a simple check and dummy up some wires directly from the battery to the lights & see fi there's any difference.
