my 1994 impreza will at any given time dye, could be while driving or at a stop and then will start but not stay running for an undefined period of time, some times the 5th time i try it sometimes the next morning. what could this be and why does it only do it at random times? please help me.

When it dies while you're driving, do any lights turn on in the dash?

 

Look up how to pull OBD1 codes. Even if the check engine light isn't on, there may be a stored code that can help.

 

Does that car have a MAF sensor? Square top near the air filter box?

bad coil??

Sounds like a failing maf. I would also check codes before replacing a parts though.

94 have a crank pos. sensor? some older soobs had intermittent CPSes.
