EA71 Transmission rebuild kit

Featured Replies

Hey all,

I'm doing some research to see if there are any rebuild kits out there for the factory EA71 4 speed 4wd transmission. Anyone have any good leeds? I may have to do a rebuild. Not sure exactly.

Uh I am pretty sure there is a piece of metal missing that would normally block off that hole, looking into the transmission it would seem there are some nice little metal shavings.... has anyone ever seen this happen before?

It looks like the factory casting of the transmission housing had that spot cast as if the factory intended to punch it out. Well what I think happened is, that little square piece of metal broke loose some-how and fell into the transmission and bounced around on the clutch/flywheel. I won't know for sure until my mechanic looks at it.

I just looked at one of the EA71 4 speeds I have (Sorry I haven't got you a weight on those yet, no scale on hand) and on the one I could see, that square was filled in as a single casting of the trans case.  It looks like it can be punched/cut out, but it is filled in on the one trans.

I agree. Probably for clutch fork on RHD vehicles.

Thanks guys, this pretty much convinces me that my original assumption of the blank letting go and falling into the flywheel is correct. I'm planning on taking it to my mechanic in about a week or so.

To go back to your original post I'd say you'll never find one - kit - but you might get lucky with the guy who has Danny W's old stock. Djcommie if I'm correct. Or there's a couple others here and on eBay with new old stock but KITS hardly ever show up in factory form now.

Subafreak - Jesse - redid mine as I was able to source the seals mostly through my dealer and some gathered from past finds.

This truly is s weird one you've got here. First one I've heard of.

I have at least one extra of these trannies but it's buried and it's the dead of winter. And I'm in CT.

You probably don't need a re-seal just getting the dropped plate out but given its age I'd say do it and feel better going forward.

Good luck !
