86 BRAT another spout of electrical issues

Featured Replies

So previously i had some headlight and blinker issues, and after taking 'grumpy car', as ive dubbed it, to a subaru dealer, they told me theres a short in the wiring harness and didnt fix anything. Yet somehow havent had blinker problems since. Anyways fastforward 3 months to now, my headlights completely stopped working, along with the horn, hazards (blinkers still functional), cooling fans and memory power for the dash clock. Did a fuse blow or a wire come loose or hopefully not some carestrophic short? From what ive seen any fuses i know of are still good, so im a little baffled

Your Subaru dealer does not know what they are talking about.

If you had a short, then you would have blown fuses/fusible links and they would be able to point you in a certain direction,at least.

Make sure you have power on both sides of the green fusible link and on both sides of fuse #2.

Sounds more like a loose ground connection to me.

Find the common ground located above the fuse box and put a voltmeter between the harness and battery negative w/the car on.

Should be close to 0.0 volts. If not, there is a ground problem.

+1 They clearly didn't care enough about you or your car. Should have been an easy fix for a dealer. I would seriously question their 'electrical guy's' abilities.

Naru, question about the harness posted above.    I have similar problem, I have found the common ground above the fusebox... However, could you identify more specifically the harness (where and what wire to probe)  and what you mean by battery negative (is that a known good ground).    Thanks in advance.

Put your meter between the black harness wire attached to the ground point and the battery negative clamp.

There is no better ground than battery negative.

Lol i was pissed when they told me that they pretty much did nothing, then they thought wrong that they might find a new harness (as if. I could have told them that). Luckily they at least the peace of mind to not charge me for their incompatence. And to be clear, am i checking the fuse box by the knee board, or behind the battery?

By your knee.Its kinda hidden.
