February 24, 201610 yr I've been shopping around for a timing belt kit with a water pump for the greater part of the afternoon. I've found most of the third party sellers like NAPA and O'reilly's want like 300 bucks for a kit. Here are a few I'm looking at. Anyone have thoughts on these? http://www.amazon.com/97-98-Subaru-EJ22E-Timing-AISIN/dp/B00Y12ZFVC/ref=sr_1_5?s=automotive&ie=UTF8&qid=1456343739&vehicle=1998-13-62-147--16--6-177-117-1-1---1-0&sr=1-5&ymm=1998%3Asubaru%3Aimpreza&keywords=ej22+timing+belt http://www.amazon.com/Gates-TCKWP254A-Engine-Timing-Water/dp/B003TUA5Y4/ref=sr_1_12?s=automotive&ie=UTF8&qid=1456343813&vehicle=1998-13-62-147--16--6-177-117-1-1---1-0&sr=1-12&ymm=1998%3Asubaru%3Aimpreza&keywords=timing+belt+kit http://www.amazon.com/Gates-TCKWP254-Engine-Timing-Water/dp/B003TUA5W6/ref=sr_1_3?s=automotive&ie=UTF8&qid=1456343813&vehicle=1998-13-62-147--16--6-177-117-1-1---1-0&sr=1-3&ymm=1998%3Asubaru%3Aimpreza&keywords=timing+belt+kit Does anyone have any suggestions on a good kit to purchase? It's frustrating because some have the seals, some don't, some have tensioners, some don't..
February 24, 201610 yr Also consider Mizumo Auto--I've bought two kits from them and have been pleased. $165.99 + $35 FedEx shipping. Includes timing belt, Aisin water pump with proper metal gasket, idler pulleys, crank & cam seals (with 2 extra cam seals--funny story!) Do you really need a new tensioner? The old (horizontal cylinder) ones are pretty durable. Google ebay mizumoauto and check them out. Sorry--for some reason I can't paste a link on here.
February 24, 201610 yr Author Thanks for the replies. My engine type is an EJ22EA - Does this mean I need an integrated assembly or non-integrated assembly tensioner?
February 24, 201610 yr What year is your car? Either of those brands are decent. I'd probably prefer the gates pulleys, but GMB is certainly quality. I would definitely prefer the Aisin pump, but whatever. I think you've figured it out, but I'll mention it anyway. Those Gates kits are not interchangeable. They use a different tensioner (belt and other pulleys are the same, water pump is probably the same).
February 24, 201610 yr I have no idea what the "EA" designation means. Might be best to remove the driver's side end piece of the timing belt cover and look inside to identify the tensioner. Probably need a flashlight and a small mirror to see! Good luck!
February 24, 201610 yr EA, I think is a pre 1995 engine, so should be the old style tensioner. Really they didn't change until 1998 or 1999. Most if not all 22E's will be the old style non intergrated tensioner.. Edited February 24, 201610 yr by matt167
