why would the fans be on from a cold start ? 96 j2.2 l

Featured Replies

I recently replaced the head gaskets,   but the fans where working normally i believe.   the only other thing i did was degreese and pressure wash the engine and bay.

The fans go on from a cold start and stay on..

what should i look for?

the wire is connected to the censer.   fans are on so it has power.

Any advice what it could be ?  Thanks

they(or maybe just one on a 96?)may come on if the a/c is on - make sure it's off and try again?

If the AC isn't turned on then there may be a problem within the ECU. It controls the fan operation by making a ground connection which turns on the fan relay. If the diagnostic connectors are tied together under the dash that will do it also.

Is it throwing any codes? If the engine coolant temp sensor is bad or not connected the ECU will run the fans as a failsafe since it doesn't know what the temp is. There's two sensors - one for the gauge, the 'coolant temp sensor', which is not the sensor we're looking at/for. The other is the engine coolant temp sensor - that's the one I'm referring to. (Or as already mentioned if the a/c or defrost is on that will do it too).

It  was because the engine was being started with the A/C on.  Thanks

Gotta love those easy fixes.

The fans will come on with the heat selector on defrost, too.
