July 23, 20169 yr I am getting ready to put a 2.2 into a 99 outback. I have done this a couple times before using a 95 2.2. My question is, are the 90-94 2.2 motors as good as the 95. The 95 motors are getting hard to find.
July 23, 20169 yr You can use a 90-94 but they're OBD1 so you need a 95+ intake manifold and wiring harness. Also none of the 90-94 have EGR so if you need EGR that's something to consider.
July 27, 20169 yr You also have the option of using a 96-98 2.2. You just have to unbolt the Y pipe at the first connection set of flanges and bolt it to your existing exhaust system (with a new gasket of course). Sure you lose the dual port heads, but the 96-98 engines seem more plentiful (at least where I am). My first swap, I made the mistake of unbolting at the connection that is held together with bolts and springs (the one near the tail shaft of the transmission). That one is a bit harder to get to seal again. Edited August 14, 20169 yr by Ionlyhave3suubs
July 27, 20169 yr They are the perfect swap for the EJ25D cars. Auto's have EGR and dual port exhaust ( so you need not swap to single port ). '94's never had EGR and '96 was first year of single port.. '95-'96 are otherwise identical
