This is my first subaru. 2000 outback sport ej22 i think. About 230000miles. Like a dumb I ran it out of oil. Now the engine sounds like an old diesel truck and won't drive.

 

Can anyone tell me what this noise might be or how to fix it?

Rod and crankshaft bearings are now history. Engine is junk. Sorry. 

Yep, new engine time. Fortunately it's a pretty easy engine swap on the subaru.

Well Subaru like most other car company's design engines that when ran out of oil destroys the lower end.

I'd say if you ask yourself this question you should take it to a shop. You will need another engine.

1999-2001 2.2 liter from a legacy or impreza will work

 

1999 forester or impreza RS & 2000-2004 2.5 liters will work as well. 

 

make sure the drivers side cam/crank triggers are the same or just install the ones from your current engine on the next one and you won't have to check.  there's two different style, need to keep the correct ones to the vehicle.
