Brake caliper questions

Featured Replies

There is a tear in the rubber cover (unsure about what that bit is called) on the back of one of my front calipers. Is that bad? Also any advice on what to use to adjust the piston? I don't have any specialty tools. And is it righty tighty, lefty loosy? Also, how do I adjust the hill holder? 87 subaru 3 door manual fwd

As far as adjusting the caliper piston in, I've always used a small adjustable wrench using the jaws as a spanner wrench, the piston is to be turned cw (righty titey)

The torn boot will let moisture and dirt into the parking brake mechanism. Not good for long term functioning of the parking brake.

"on the back" - i assume you mean the parking brake cover like DaveT mentioned.  they are massively saturated in grease usually, so should be protected for awhile, I assume you can just get a used boot and swap it out.  not sure you can buy those new, rockauto sometimes has oddball brake components like that.

plenty of us on here have calipers lying around and could send you the boot probably?, post in the parts wanted forum.
