98 gt woes

Featured Replies

Not having fun with this one. The 2.5 was bad so I picked up a 2.2 for it. Rolled the dice and lost. Motor was supposed to be good and from a wrecked car. Put it in and bad rod knock. Then, being not very happy, I grabbed some parts I had laying around, a good 2.5 block and some good 2.2 heads and threw them together with new everything. Put it in and now it sounds like #4 slight rod knock. Pulling everything apart today to hopefully install a good 2.2 I am going to go look at and hear run.

yeah, good luck

ducking in to remind you - weak tb tensioners can sound like rod knock  or piston slap sometimes.

Both motors had new timing everything done with 2 bolt tensioners.

Do the pistons in the early 2.5 blocks come up over the deck?

I have two sets of COMTEC H/G for the 2.5 block and 2.2 heads if you need them.

I was going to build a high compression motor but have not done it.

The 98 Impreza OBS I picked up for my Daughter with a thrown rod took 3 engines to get a good on.

You never know with used engines, but over the years and 40+ junk yard engines I've only had 2 that did not work out.

Do the pistons in the early 2.5 blocks come up over the deck?

Yes they do. This results in thicker then normal head gaskets for the early 2.5 motors, and resulting head gasket failure problem. Subaru revised the head gaskets several times to make improvements.

What about the phase 2 2.5, do they also do the same

Larry, how thick are the cosmetic gaskets you have? I am interested in at least 1 set.
