Transmission for 96 Legacy 2.2?

Featured Replies

My transmission finally kicked the bucket at 248k miles. A little trouble shifting two days ago, then yesterday, a lot more trouble, then, just slowly putters to a stop. Nothing wrong with the engine. No trouble with fluid (except it's now full of junk), shop says it needs a rebuild or replacement.

Which transmissions will fit on this car? Only other 95-97 2.2 Legacy's? Or will something else fit it, too?

Any thoughts on switching to Manual, or FWD?

Not many used trannies around here, it'd be nice to have some options, or get an idea of how to ship one.

Can't tell where you are but I'm in CT and have a decent 4EAT for those years. Make an offer if you're up here. It's way too heavy for me to handle. It's in eastern CT. I'm getting an engine from this donor vehicle. I'd be happy with $200 just to not have to store it. Can include free a second same tranny but has a cracked or damaged transfer case I am told. Just want stuff I don't need now gone.

Hi,

He's in UT.

This is covered on here  many times so double-check, but the '95-'98 Legacy and Impreza used the same 4EAT w/a 4.11 FD ratio.

you can also use the '96-'98 4EAT Legacy OB/GT, Impreza RS and Forester IF YOU CHANGE THE REAR diff to match their 4.44 ratio.

And the '90-'91 Legacy used the same 4.11 ratio 4EAT. The '92-'94 could be used IF YOU CHANGE the diff to match their 3.90.

So, if the car is worth it, there are multiple options.

5-speed swap has also been done many times but has many things to consider = Search on here and Online. FWD 4EAT would work but their are some gotchas and Why give up AWD?

Look Car-part.com and ebay. I'd be wary of any AT trans that have been sitting on the shelf for more than  a year as the seals may have dried up.

Thanks for the feedback. Prolly won't try to change anything. Keep it simple. Just have to have one shipped from somewhere I guess.

So, found a tranny nearby, 122k miles, yard wants $275 (includes delivery to the shop), but now they don't want to ship it since Vin numbers show different production dates (both are 96 2.2 Legacy's) how do I convince the guy it should be fine?

There is a TZ- code on the bellhousing of Subaru Trans. If those match then the Seller shouldn't have an issue. They may not match, but it should stil work.

Other than you agreeing to buy it 'as is' - which I wouldn't do - I don't have any other ideas??

What is the original condition of the donor car? Crashed, etc.? And make sure it comes w/the Torque Converter - in case yours is bad?.

It's crashed, they say it was a "good hit" and the transmission is unaffected. They Offer a full 30-day refund. They don't wanna ship it because if it doesn't work they're stuck with the shipping costs. I'll call em tomorrow and offer to pay for the extra shipping or something.
