Timing Belt Marks Gone

Featured Replies

So after doing a head gasket job I'm about to put my timing belt back on and realize that all the marks are gone!

Does anyone have the number of teeth between the lines so I can mark it back up? I can faintly see some of the markings that indicate rotation direction but no lines are left.

Not sure why this happened as its only like 3k old...

Its from a 1998 Subaru Legacy ej25d

jread,

The marks have worn off because the back of the timing belt goes around the various idler pulleys and the water pump pulley.

As for the timing marks, each of the cam pulleys and the crank pulley have a timing mark stamped into them that matches up with a mark on the front of the engine when they are in the proper position. Basically, if each cam mark and the crank pulley marks are properly located with their marks on the engine casing, you have only to put the belt on ensuring no slop between the various pulleys, other than the tensioner pulley, before you pull the pin on the tensioner.

Now it is a little more involved than that, because you need to ensure that the crank pulley is correctly aligned at Top Dead Center for cylinder #1.

All of this is explained in YouTube videos (get the proper one for your engine though) and in the Factory Service Manual. You can download a free copy of it here:

Good Luck!

Are you referring to the marks on the belt? They're not needed. Make sure all of the slack on the belt is below the cam gears by the tensioner. You can lightly clamp the belt to each cam gear if needed to prevent any slipping. After everything is back in place and the tensioner is released, turn the motor over manually a few times to make sure all the marks are still lined up.

Yep. count teeth. Marks on the belt are very optional. Marks on the engine and cams and crank are what to follow.

ALWAYS turn the motor over 2 full revolutions by hand and make sure the marks still line up before starting the motor.

Once turned the belt marks will not line up again, but the pulley and crank marks should be the same and/or maybe a 1/2-1 tooth off.

correct. Was referencing the cam, crank and block/timing cover marks

I find the marks pointless:

Crank and cams dead on

Pull tensioner pin

Verify marks

Rotate by hand one revolution and verify marks again.

I would do that regardless of marks on the belt or not, so the marks are of no use to me.
