May 12, 20178 yr Hiya boys! Bugeye RS 5 speed, 1" lift. Broke at the end of a 14 hour drive. Car gets driven HARD. Started popping, clunking, binding when we came off the highway. Replaced suspect front CV. Replaced suspect propshaft (it was toast!) Most suspension components replaced in the last year Idles fine, coasts with no bind All gears engage Rear diff spins free Clutch has ~ 40k I've had it to the mechanic for a second opinion, they pointed out the bad propshaft UJ. Binds tight enough to stop the car at low speed. Binding much worse when turning. I'm thinking further inspection of engine and tranny mounts? Or front, center diff? FYI this is well beyond typical clapped-out Subie noises. Edited May 12, 20178 yr by singletrack
May 12, 20178 yr Will it do it in the air? If you can get it up on stands or a lift, try putting it in gear and cranking the steering to both locks, see if you see anything. That's where I would start.

May 12, 20178 yr is it 'kinda better' when stone cold - then gets bad after 5-10 minutes? if so, points to center diff failure from what I've read.
May 12, 20178 yr Stuck spider in the front diff could do that. I've seen seized spiders in older trucks run like a posi from being stuck. Never heard of a Subaru doing it but never know. You say its run hard
May 12, 20178 yr Author Foward U-Joint was totally shot what was wrong with the prop shaft? Torque bind - the VLSD in the trans failed?
May 12, 20178 yr Author No, hot or cold doesn't matter. is it 'kinda better' when stone cold - then gets bad after 5-10 minutes? if so, points to center diff failure from what I've read. Edited May 12, 20178 yr by singletrack
May 14, 20178 yr Auto trans will shear the drum off inside the trans if driven with too much binding. Does anyone know the equivalent failure of an MT stressed internally with torque bind? Torque bind seems the obvious starting point - maybe it's been happening awhile or was happening under the aggressive driving described which precipitated or accelerated the U joint failure and busted some stuff in the trans as well. Never seen a ujoint mess up the trans wxcept shearing off and flailing around and crack the extension housing.
May 15, 20178 yr I saw this, dunno about compatibility; http://www.subaruoutback.org/forums/65-parts-accessories-performance/421050-center-differential.html#post4817538
