June 14, 20178 yr Hey all, Just doing a project engine (not subaru but still a flat 4!) and just need to know the compression ratio for the ej16 engines... Any help would be appreciated.. Cheers, Lawson
June 14, 20178 yr G'day, We didn't get that engine in the US so not a heap of info, but here's a bit: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Subaru_EJ_engine#EJ16 GL, TD
June 14, 20178 yr I love Wikipedia, and I am an occasional contributor. But beware of those compression figures for the EJ16, since there's no knowing where they come from. Wikipedia entries are supposed to be backed-up by references, so that one can trace the info back to the source. In this case there are no links to any credible sources. Those numbers may be correct, but I would add some skepticism to the mix.
June 14, 20178 yr +1 Found this from one of my regular online resources - see attached - should be for RHD models, per the cover. I can PM the link to the full manual if needed. Looks like 9.4:1. Edited June 14, 20178 yr by wtdash
June 22, 20178 yr Author Ok thanks heaps...(for some reason i am able to reply now!) Also wondering what the spark system is on these engines? (I know nothing, so explaining everything..) Is it distributor, crank trigger ect? Cheers, Lawson
June 22, 20178 yr My 1999 1.6 was just exactly the same as the 1.8 and 2.0 of those days. (the 1.6 is a 1.8 with different pistons, which is a part of the piston slap issue with these cars but they can last well over 400k km on LPG).
June 28, 20178 yr Author Yep ok, Really need to know the ignition system for these engines, explain the basics as i have no idea! Does the ecu control the ignition? does these engines have a crank trigger? or cam position sensor? Any help would be appreciated... Cheers, Lawson
June 28, 20178 yr HI, As we didn't get the 1.6 we may not be as helpful as your fellow Aussie Mates. You'll want to also check your PM to get familiar w/the FSM....your new best friend. TD Edited June 28, 20178 yr by wtdash
July 1, 20178 yr Author Yep thanks heaps for that. I worked out what i wanted, and ended up getting the crank and cam sensor off an ej22 - think from what i have read, they are pretty interchangeable and do the same job. Just wondering if anyone knows what position on the crank the keyway is positioned? whether its 0 degrees or between 5 degrees btdc and 7 degrees atdc....Just need to know because I need to adapt onto the "project engine" ... Cheers,Lawson
