Disposing of removed Airbags?

Featured Replies

I've scrapped lots of Subaru's over the years but never thought about what the yards do with non-deployed airbags.

I have several passenger and drivers side airbags that I'm going to recycle.

I searched the web and found a few options but other than deploying them with 12 volts - 30 feet away and then just sending them through the metal recycle centers not much.

Thought I'd ask.

Thanks,

Larry

That's pretty much it. A lot of yards will sell airbags, but the ones that don't get sold have to be deployed before they can be recycled.

Put it facing down and set it off!  saw a bimmer one go about three stories in the air then kind of parachute back to earth. Sounds like a gunshot or loud firework though, so, you know, be careful.

Talked to the scrap yard supervisor.  He told me they don't do a think with the cars they scrap complete with good airbags.  He said the shredder didn't care.

I was going to say you could booby-trap your yard by digging a shallow hole and placing them in it, then put a thin piece of wood over that and cover with grass :) Be a great way to keep pesky teenagers or a stray cat away....(had a stray cat get in my Legacy via an open rear hatch and it hid when I was closing it; was in there for 24 hours..... it ripped the tops of 3 door cards and defecated in an empty box, so no love there).
