1999 2.2 interchangeability

Featured Replies

I bought a1999 legacy wgn., new to Subaru so I did not know that was the "SPECIAL" year, special meaning several things such as piston rings that cost three to 20 times as much as others, if you can find them, seriously people are trying to sell them for between $400 and $1000 !. If you do not mind waiting a forever to get the right ones, which most people know nothing about, ( they have a 2.5 mm oil ring, all others are 2.8 or 3 mm) you can order them from dealership for $135 ( $45 for a 2.5 or a 2.2 with 3mm oil groove). Anyhow, I have the engine rebuilt and have decided I want to put it in a different car as this one has rust issues. What cars and years will this thing go in? Plug n play that is. Thank you.

it will replace any Phase II SOHC NA engine. up to 04 or 05 depending on model.

The Phase II 2.2 engine isn't worth rebuilding. Sorry you went through that. The 2.5 is a direct replacement for it, and the phase-II 2.2 engine had problems with oil consumption. It was dropped because it wasn't any more efficient than the 2.5, has expensive parts, and makes 15 less HP.

It'll swap with any 1999-2001 2.2 Subaru.

1999 will be some lower end Legacy's and all impreza's

2000-2001 will be some impreza's only.  Legacy's didn't get the 2.2 in 2000-2001.

2000-2004 EJ25's will also swap but you need a single port 2.2 exhaust manifold as the 2.5's are dual port.

Hey LEOD,

I have a 99 OBS that needs a motor, and probably a center diff.

The timing belt broke 30K prematurely.

I’m assuming bent valves, and have decided not to resurrect it.

It is a manual and was in my opinion developing torque bind when hot.

Has ~ 225K on it.

Body and interior are in good shape. I'm the second owner.

I’m in northern CA. near the Oregon border,...maybe too far from you.

I’m getting rid of it one way or the other this summer.

If your interested in a shell for you motor PM me.

I wish you were in the NE, cause I have a 99 impezza 2.2 with rusted body but good engine. At 175K no oil burning.
