July 13, 200421 yr Hi all. Tis me again! Aren't you glad I have a question again? Well, anyway, here I go: I was wandering in Walmart and have come across (yet again) this oil additive called Engine Restorer or something like that. The descriptions say that it supposes to give my 'worn' engine some new life. It will restore compression, therefore restore lost horsepower. I wonder how effective this oil additive is? Anyone has anything positive or negative comments to pewk? I need to know if I should buy it or not. Thanks again!
July 13, 200421 yr i believe i have heard the guys on cartalk actually give this one some credit. but i've never tried it.... http://www.cartalk.com/content/columns/Archive/1999/November/11.html they tend to be not too sponsor based/biased...
July 14, 200421 yr What are you restoring? Do you even know the static compression ratio of your engine currently? Or its OEM spec to match against? Dont be that guy If you are worried that your engine is 'worn out' do a compression test and a full tune up first or have a good mechanic do a full inspection and diagnosis of your car. Then I think you can make a more educated decision on how to fix your Subaru.
July 14, 200421 yr I swear by this stuff!!! It is not that expensive and as far as I'm concerned it WORKS!!!! I've used it for many years in many different kinds of engines and it really does work. Joe
July 14, 200421 yr Author Yeah, it's not that much. It's like $4.97 or something at Walmart. Checkers Auto Parts sell it for $7.99! Wow, I can't believe it! Anyway, I think my next oil change, I might add it.
July 14, 200421 yr I also use it and it does inc. compression a little. IIRC I got a 5-8 psi increase on all cylinders. I dont think its a waste of money and for a few bucks you cant really go wrong.
July 14, 200421 yr You can get nearly the same effect by useing a heavy single grade oil like 50 wt. It will give you some good effects temporaily like increase compression a tiny bit and reduce oil burning, sometimes it will even quiet worn lifters a bit. The fact is that the engine is worn and this won't change that. Think of it as marketing in a can. I have some extra spark intensifiers for you too.
