My '86' Subaru GL has been sitting for several months. When I got it running and moved it I found this where it had been parked, sort of in the middle Anyone know what is? It's about 3.5" diam. and 1" wide and broke

A bit of rubbish that was under your Subi? 

It’s not looking like a familiar item off the ol’ L series that I can think of… that doesn’t mean I right though!

If your 86 GL is a D/R 4WD it might have come off one of the rear axles. I still have the rubber bands on my rear axle boot big ends.

 

^ I think @cznyis on the money here! I forgot about that rubber cover on the CV joints. They’re not always there these days!

I've used an old wheel barrow inner tube to make them for spares when rebuilding. MC inner tubes, other inner tubes may also work.

Anything to cover the big end boot bands & protect them from rocks, etc.  

Remove axle, slip band on with silicone spray & reinstall.
