August 10, 200421 yr Here's my problem. I have a 83 brat 4x4 with 3 spd auto tranny. It wants to stay in 2nd and not wanting to shift into drive. But when the car warms up or is driven a little bit. The shifting problem goes away. What is my problem? Do I need to rebuild it or just change filter in tranny? Any help would be greats. Maybe a vacum line Vic
August 10, 200421 yr Its most likely the Governor. Its on the right side (passenger) of the tranny and looks like a big cup. Remove the 3 bolts and pull out the gear. Cleaning sometimes works, but most times a replacement will have to be made. Go to your local wrecking yard and look for any Soob from 82-92 that has a 3spd AT in it. They should work, altho I would try and get one from a later model.

August 12, 200421 yr I have a 3AT with the same problem. Do you have a tranny fluid leak? Check your bolts and seals. My problem was solved by tightening the govenor housing bolts down.
