August 17, 200421 yr has anyone ever had aftermarket sunroof put in their car? do it yourself or professionally installed? did it leak? cost?
August 17, 200421 yr Aftermarket sunroofs leak a HUGE percent of time. I suggest avoiding them at all costs, but thats just me. Most aftermarkets do not come with drain tubes. Without drain tubes, any water that gets in just stays there and causes rust or drips down on your head.
August 22, 200421 yr almost tried this recently. i got a friend that works on sunroofs for dealerships (although he is contracted - got his own business) and he hates it every time he has to do one. here's what he said about it when i inquired: 1. leaks, no matter how much you think you sealed it 2. leaks, no matter how much you think you sealed it 3. see either one or two 4. unless tinted or covered gets car very hot from sun...hence, sunroof to me as well it seems like it would be easy enough to install myself... you know, cut a big gaping hole in the top, trim it off with weather stripping and duct tape, buy a plexiglass window, and secure it down. but if a professional (as well as a good friend) tells me its not worth it, im gonna probably take his word.
August 22, 200421 yr Factory roofs however, are pretty bulletproof. The one in my 84 doesn't leak a drop, and neither have any of the T-tops on Brat's I've encountered. GD
August 22, 200421 yr i almost bought an 87xt with a "true" sunroof... the ones that dont have a window, just a hole and a cover... and the locks to keep the lid down had previously snapped off. hmm, wonder if that would have the same effect at 85 mph as an unlatched hood... except instead of blocking your view ahead as an open hood would do the flailing top flies off and smashes into the car behind you. at least the turbo will help you get out of there before he sees your license plate number.
