Impreza Towing

Featured Replies

I have an 01 Impreza OBS 2.2l 5 speed and am thinking about towing my 20' highlander sailboat close to 300 miles with it. Is this a terrible idea? It is a double axel trailer. anything i should do before hand i'm running mobil 1 5w30 in the egine and 75w90 in the trans and dif. is there anything i will be hurting other then the clutch and the breaks. I'm also not exactly sure how much this thing weighs if anyone with more experience has an estimate let me know please. does anyone have eny reconmendation for hitches, draw tie seems to have good prices but i don't know too much about this type of thing any advice would be much appriciated. thanks....

I would find out how much it weighs and check the owner's manual. The max weight for my Forester is 2000lbs with trailer brakes, and that's with the 2.5L engine. Yours may be less.

It really depends on weight of the boat and trailer. If it is 1000 or less than I would say it would not be an issue, unless you are also going to load the heck out of you car with stuff at the same time.

If you are not sure of the weight have someone tow it to a local truck stop, they have scales there and you can pay to have it weighed.

alright so i found out the boat weighs about 850lbs i'm not sure about the trailer but i'm guessing it can't weigh more then 650lbs to push it past its 1500lbs limit. any sugustions for a hitch?

I have one from U-haul on my legacy. $200 or so installed, very impressed with quality and wireing.

Get a transmission cooler put on there! That will help keep the tranny cool, which is the part that is most likely to be hurt severly by towing. They run about $50 if you do it yourself or ~$150 installed. Might as well drain the radiator fluid per the owners manual. Really, the tranny cooler is a nice thing, I am putting one on my car this week, and I never tow anything.

Take care...

Does he really need it with a 5MT?

LMAO! Well, how embarrasing. :banghead: I got so excited about my auto-tranny cooler...I would recommend this part for auto-trannies, esp. those who tow....
