noisy fuel pump

Featured Replies

gentlemen, My 82 brumbie's fuel pump is very noisy, i can hear it thumping away like a jamacian rythem band over the engine noise at idle. Is this normal?

I am also 102 years old and starting to grow hair out of my ears,,is this normal too? ( oh sorry , wrong message board)

a replacement was quoted at AU$ 160, so i dont want to buy a new one for the fun of it. How noisy are your pumps?

Pretty noisy. Common problem. The Brat/Brumby fuel pump is located very close to the cabin. Other cars won't notice this as much. I replaced mine because I thought it was too noisy with one from a hatch.... didn't make much difference. It's still thumping away. Been like that for a while, and I doubt it will die.

The fuel pump on my '83 GL has been noisy since I got the car two years ago. I switched it out with the one from my parts car, which I know was good, and the noise was still there. I looked at a diagram of the fuel pump innards and saw that there is a check valve in there, which I thought was "clicking" (my noise) due to perhaps some fuel line obstruction. So I ran the car out of gas, and blew compressed air through the fuel lines to try to remove the obstuction (if any), no luck, still clicking. So I've just lived with it, the car runs fine. Would love too figure it out now that I'm about to sell the car.

My personal belief is that it's not the pump itself, but rather the lines comming off the pump pulsating against the body. The pump is well insulated, and the "sound" doesn't appear to actually be a sound, but a vibration through the body of the vehicle.
