well i have a question concerning wheels, i was wondering if older subaru 4 lug wheels will fit new models like my loyale, or are they all interchangable. if they dont work i would like to know why. :-\ im confused:-\

 

Also what are some inexpensive ways to get a little more power out of my loyale. im going to off road it so a turbo doesnt sound good, but i did free up the exhaust a bit by cleaning out the cat and putting on a glass pack(no emisions here:) ). i was thinking of a cold air intake but i dont know how much power that would give me. by the way its all stock engine wise.

The EA81 wagon wheels are slightly smaller and will rub on your calipers up front So if you want wagon wheels get them off an old EA82.

 

Pretty sure all EA82 wheels will swap between all other EA82.

 

As for power; its the EA82 SPFI so you are pretty much on the high end already of stock power output LOL. It's not gonna be fast unless you have seriouse money and mechanical skills so I wouldnt worry about it.

 

How slow is it ? Just kinda wussy or so slow it wont get out of its own way? You should have little trouble getting upto 80 mph or spinning the front tires.

Rather than punching out your cat; replace it with a piece of pipe (Kinda hard to do on the Y pipe, but you can have an exhaust shop do it if you take just the pipe in there and tell them it's for an off-road only car) because just hollowing it out creates turbulence which creates more backpressure than the cat does. Another alternative is to replace the two cats with a single, three way high-flow catalyst. That will keep it legal, and give you a little more power.

 

You can get a little more power out of it by putting a hotter coil in it, some 8mm solid core wires, widening your plug gap a little bit, and cutting the bottom of your air box out.

 

And yes, all Subaru 4 lug wheels with the exception of the Justy, are 4x140mm lug pattern. There are some differences in offset that make some of the wheels not interchangeable (for example, EA81 white 8 spoke wheels won't fit on an EA82 car in the front because they won't clear the caliper).

While they share the same bolt pattern, a lot of the earlier wheels will not fit the EA82 series cars due to clearance with the brake calipers. This does not apply to all wheels, but most significatly it applies to all the "wagon" style wheels. The EA81 wagon wheels will not clear the caliper on the EA82's unless you grind on the caliper itself. The EA81 steels, and I think some of the alloys will fit the EA82's.

 

This same problem exists with the Gen 1 wheels as well - the Gen 1 wheels and also the "jackman" spoked wheels will not quite fit an EA81 car either. Again - some have "made" them fit by doing some grinding.

 

So the answer depends on what wheels the Brat has on it that you want to fit on your Loyale....

couple things, most have been posted all over the board previously:

 

-shift at higher rpms for most power, many subarus are still comfortable at 5000-5600 rpms.

 

-the larger the tires, the less power you will get out of the engine. same goes for wheels. The added weight bogs it down quite a bit.

 

-tune ups seem to boost the overall performance of the car, even if it is slight. if you havent done this, and dont know the last time it was performed, i recommend having it done.

 

-i, being a loyale owner as well, realize that this car isnt technically made for heavy duty off road, so the options on what to do to keep economy and add power are somewhat limited to what a lot of the motorheads on this site do to their gls, brats, and rx's. they have d/r 4wd, while we are stuck with pushbutton high. nevertheless i have gone places i never thought i could, and on bald tires to boot.

 

-an air intake (for instance, a hood scoop) would be fun to look at on the hood of a car with 90 horsepower, and might boost it up a little as well. if you want to rip up the hood then go for it, but keep in mind that you cant really fix what you've cut into. i have plans to do the same to my loyale since theres a fatty golf ball indention in it.

 

-you can make it look nice just by doing little things: roof rack, grill guard, paint scheme, floodlights (recommended for night-roading), decals from mick (subliminal advertising added here), etc.

 

-disregard that last note, i just realized you said power, not spiffiness. ill keep it in there just in case you wanted tips, eh.

 

-redoing the exhaust system's a good idea for power. 2" pipe instead of the stock 1-7/8" would yield some extra oomph.
