handson
I'm having a continuous problem with missing at idle on my 93 Legacy 2.2 NA. I've replaced plugs and wires, checked compression, listened to the injectors firing, and I'm out of ideas. The engine will run the same with both passenger side injectors disconnected as it does with them connected. I've just driven this car 200 miles in this shape and I can't believe it's running on only 2 cylinders. I have no history on the car, bought it as a parts car from the previous owner for $200 due to the missing. Drove it 200 miles home with no problems(except the missing) at up to 75mph. No CEL, but I've cleared it anyways. Any body have any ideas? Thanks!
camosuba
try the igintor its on the firewall in the centre of the car i had one fail and two plugs wern't firing :-\ or your coil pack ?regards camo
Legacy777
when you pull the plugs on the side that aren't "firing" supposedly....are they wet with fuel? Have you tried pulling the ecu codes? instructions to get the codes are on my site. Due to the wasted spark ignition....it's not really possible for one entire side of the engine not to have spark since the front bank of cylinders utilize the same coil. Same goes for the rear...they share the same coil.

At idle, the vacuum is highest and so there would be too much air. This would give the impression of the car running the same with the injectors disconnected. At power the car would seem to run OK because the furl/air balance is more near the correct value. That is my guess at your problem
handson
I haven't had a chance to look at the car since yesterday, but your idea about the intake gasket makes a bunch of sense to me. I can't imagine the car would run at 75 on only 2 cylinders. So, as I remeber from my old one legged auto shop teacher, the way to check for a bad intake gasket is to squirt oil all around the edge of the manifold right? 2nd stupid question, will the car work fine without the hillholder cable from the clutch? The hillbiily mechanic I got this from has some kind of motorcycle cable wedged in there with tiewraps and hose clamps. I don't even want to touch it unless I have a replacement if I need one. Thanks!
Legacy777
The intake gasket is going to be a little tough to diagnose. I say this because mine were going. I tried starting fluid and everything to see if engine would rev up. Couldn't get it to do anything. So either I didn't have a leak, or it never showed it's face. The oil trick would be interested to see if it works.

Thanks! Your proposed oil squirting technique may work. I guess the idea is that it temporarily closes the small leak so that you can see if the engine runs better. You would need to be sure to cover the whole perimeter. Perhaps a thick grease may be better. If you had a vacuum gauge I would check the manifold vacuum. Haynes says it should be 425 to 550 mm (about 16 in) mercury and not fluctuate. If it is 10 to 25kpa (2in Hg) below normal and fluctuates at the low reading suspect an inlet manifold leak at an intake port. Haynes also gives a lot of other methods for diagnosis from the vacuum gauge reading.
handson
Ok, the oil treatment didn't have any effect. I pulled the plugs on that side, and they were really carboned up. No wet gas on them, just really black. They're 2 days old. Could the fuel injectors be sticking on or leaking? It appears that that side of the engine is running really rich. Any ideas? Have you checked there is spark at the plugs. You can do this by hooking up a good plug and then cranking or running the motor whilst looking for spark. maybe the suggestion of the igniter by a previous writer is worth looking at
Legacy777
Have you tested the injectors or the wiring on the injectors? With subaru's wasted spark ignition system, you can't have one side working and the other not working. Unless your spark plug wires are toasted. handson
The injectors are firing, I can hear them. I don't know how to test them beyond that except to replace them. The plug wires are new.
Skip
If you care to test your coil pack here is a reprint from Leg. 777's online manual (note: I believe they have the words "primary" and "secondary" reversed.) and It says "if the resistance is extremely low...." 0.63 ohms is pretty low, make sure you zero your DMM http://www.westol.com/neper/coiltest.JPG
handson
Bump. Anyone have any injectors they want to get rid of? Please?
88rxsedan
make sure your crank key didnt break allowing the timing to be thrown WAY off..
handson
Ok, stupid me. I checked the timing belt. It's 2 teeth off. I'll let you know when I get a chance to line it up again.
handson
Ok. It's fixed. Purrs like a cat. Which is understandable considering it ate a mouse. Or two. When I opened it up to fix the timing belt being out of time, there were at least 2 mashed mice inside the timing belt cover. Guess I know why it was off by 2 teeth. Now if I can just find some cheap white fenders, all will be happy.
