transmission fluid

Featured Replies

How much trasnsmission fluid can I expect to get out by simply draining from bottom on my Automatic 2000 Legacy GT? Hate to have my cup runneth over!

Auto or Manual?

I drained my Auto (98 2.5RS) and only got about 3qts. I know the thing holds something like 8 to 10... so I was very disapointed.

Recently did an ATF change on my 96 Legacy GT, got 5 quarts out.

Draining through the plug doesn't get it all out. So with all the warnings about different manufacturer's formulations, is it safe to mix any Dextron III ATF in with the remaining ATF fluid in the system??

I used Mobil 1 ATF for the change, bottle said it was compatible with other ATF's. Been a couple of weeks now, no problems.

I hear if you leave the plug out for a few hours you will get most of it out. I noticed on my car (auto) that it just kept draining real slow after the majority was out.

This is not true, you will never get all the fluid out of the system without flushing it with a mahcine. You can flush it yourslef by pulling a hose off and using a bucket but it is messy job.

I just did this a couple of nights ago and I got about 5.5 quarts out on ramps. I just changed the filter and refilled it, I need to go back and flush it when I get a chance. Flushing isn't messy if you are careful.

So how did you flush it?

The only way I know to flush with out a machine is this method.

1. Pull off one of the transmission return lines from the radiator and put the end into a bucket.

2. Start the car and run it until you get 2 quarts in the bucket

3. Turn off car

4. Refill 2 quarts into the transmission

5. Repeat step #2, #3, #4 until you get clean fluid going into the bucket.

This is the only way to get all the fluid out of the torque converter.

When you pull the plug and filter you only get about 5 or 6 of the 8 quarts in the system.

Yep, that's how I do it. Not messy if you are careful. Pulling the pan seems to be most of the mess associated with tranny service, and since the filter is external I have never pulled the pan on our outback.
