Heater Core in 87 Wagon?

Featured Replies

question: been looking at on-line part sites. have found one place that show the ea81 and ea82's using the same heater core, then found another that showed it changed on 1/87 to a different part.

anybody know for sure? looks like I'll be ripping the dash out for this one...

I have at least 2 87's (as well as an 86) at home. I never noticed any differences, but I'll check it out tonight.

John

my heater core went bad in my 86 sedan ,i used 1 from a 88 sedan , and it was the right size , also it sure does look like the heater core from a xt4 is the same also

I inspected all three cores I have, and they are identical. Couldn't find any part #'s though...

Unless my 2 87's were manufactured before 1/87, I would say you are ok. Remember, the inlet/outlet tubes can be modified slightly. The main thing is for the main core to physically fit.

good luck, John

yes those are heater cores, be very careful and do not damage the lines , it is a fairly big job

Those look pretty close but the inlet & outlet pipes are longer (go thru the firewall) on mine. Also the stampings on the core frame on mine are different.

I would say those will work, but you'll have to run heater hoses thru the firewall, and attach them at the core.

good luck, John

yeah, that pic above is from the ea81 heater core swap I did for the USRM. just that the parts store online info shows the ea81 and ea82 to be the same, but I didn't believe them.... just wanted to verify....

thanks,

Mick

man what a pain in the you know what!

I got a core from John, and had it checked out. it's good.

I got the old core out last night. it did not appear that the core had been leaking, but possibly just at the hose connection.... BUT it needed to come out anyway. the top of the core was covered in pine needles, and they were lodged into the fins as well.....

tonight maybe I will start the re-assembly.....

Those dash's never seem to go back together as nicely as they were assembled at the factory. If you can get it in without any squeaks or rattles, it will be a minor miracle!!

good luck, John

I expect it to go back with lots of rattles, as my method of extraction was far less than "by the book"... it was more of a "unbolt and pull, then see what's still attached" evening
