November 17, 200421 yr I have a 95 Legacy with only 60K miles. I have changed the coolant every 2 years, but wonder how long the radiators tend to last on these cars? Should I change it before I get stranded somewhere?
November 17, 200421 yr We have a 1993 Legacy with about 157,000 miles and the radiator's original. If you end up with damage in it by following an overfilled gravel truck, then that's another story.
November 17, 200421 yr My 89 Justy's radiator crapped out around 110K but on my 97 Legacy, it's still goin fine and I have 115K on it right now.
November 17, 200421 yr My 96 Legacy has near 140 K miles and the rad is still OK, but... It never overheats but the fan comes on sooner than before when stopped at idle during the summer. I suspect it's the multitude of small pieces of gravel that have hit the rad over the years and have bent a number of very thin and fragile fins blocking part of the air flow around the tubes. Since it's not leaking I'll keep it during this winter but might replace it altogether next summer. I intend to keep the car at least five more years.
November 18, 200421 yr You can strighten some of the fins witha fin comb that HVAC guys use. I also reverse flush my rad. every spring with a mild soap spray and then a hose blast from the engine side!
