Outback Viscous coupling

Featured Replies

Has anyone had any problems with the rear axle viscous coupling on a MY98 Automatic 2,5litre Outback. The mileage is still under 40K?

Can you give a little more detail to the problem?

As you can see the vehicle has little daily use by the mileage. It’s mainly used for motorway journeys of 60 miles plus. The supply dealer has diagnosed the problem with the rear axle viscous coupling and informs me that the UK importer will only supply a complete axle assembly. The symptoms are, when pulling away from a road junction where one is applying nearly full steering lock there is a pronounced judder from the back of the car, in all other modes there is no problem either in noise or vibration.

Hope this may be of help to your informed readers.

Is there any binding in sharp turns on dry pavement? Have you confirmed that all tyres (spelling just for you bloke) are the same size, evenly worn and inflated to the same pressure? Has it ever been towed wheels-on-the-ground?

Are you talking of a viscous coupling in the rear differential? That model of Outback did not get anything but an open diff in the rear in North America.

Some of the late 90's Legacys had problems with the center clutch pack. Have you put the FWD fuse in to rule that out? It was a bigger issue with the 96's and 97's to my knowledge.

There is a piston in that clutch pack from '98-up that is weak. If you can't get it locally, try one of the online Subaru parts places.
