Distributor, timing, and power questions

Featured Replies

I am having trouble in higher speeds on my 1991 Subaru Loyale. It takes approx 4000 rpm to go 65 mph. Is this normal? I thought it might be the timing advance systems on the distributor, but when I looked, I found no vacume advance unit (not even a place to mount one), nor does there appear to be a centrifugal advance mechanism. The entire unit below the rotor is sealed so I assume it is all electrical.. I didn't see a distributor picture in my repair manual that matched mine so now I am really wondering.

Also, when I hook up a timing light, I don't even come close to the TDC scale, or even 20 degrees BTDC... I am totally off the scale (perhaps a 1/4 turn of the flywheel or so) and can't adjust even close to it.

Any suggestions? Oh.. I just had a new engine put in, so I am wondering what might have been done wrong.

when you checked your timing did you remember to connect the test mode connectors?

If it's a 3-speed auto, 4000 rpm at 65 is normal.

It is possible that the disty is off a tooth.

You should have the newer crank angle distributor. It's the best of the old EA82 series and doesn't/shouldn't require any maintenance, unless its off a tooth, as Snowman mentioned. Make sure your green test connectors (underhood, near disty and wiper motor) are connected. Check your idle as well.

what if you only have one green test connector, but 2 white connectors there? Spfi 1992

Is that one green connector really just two halves connected?

Hey Corey---4000 rpm in 4th, 3200 in 5th will get you 65mph. Hope you're not making my past mistake - thought I had light on #1 wire, it wasn't.

Bump

my car really just has one connector. The ECU flashed codes on its led the whole time the car is running when it had a fault, fixed the egr so it doesn't any more. Is it already in test mode? Is this why its sackless untill 3k rpm?

Hey 91----I can only guess if you have one green connector dangling on its wire, then Subaru forgot to wire up the other half or someone cut it off. Without it you can't run a diagnostic check and the only way to erase old codes will be to disconnect the battery.

I wonder how Coreys makin out?:-\
