hooziewhatsit Posted March 14, 2005 Share Posted March 14, 2005 Hey all, Recently I got a free pre 87 turbo block with almost all required hardware. It has sat outside for the last couple years in medford covered in a tarp. The tarp blew off about a month ago. The engine has sat the entire time without the intake manifold on it. The spark plugs were in when I got there. Anyways, it didn't want to turn over when I looked at it, but since it was free, took it anyway. Finally got it apart yesterday. found major rust in two of the cylinders, one head looks bad, and you can see a ring on one piston. It did not turn over due to the rust in the cylinders. So, does this look like something that can be salvaged? The rust in the cylinders doesn't look too bad - might just need to be honed out? The rust doesn't seem to be really deep. Would I need new valves, rings, pistons, too expensive to repair so learn from it then pitch it? erik litchy Posted March 14, 2005 Share Posted March 14, 2005 its salvageable at that stage id get the engine hot tanked to remove the bulk of filth. id install new valve seats, pitted valve seats are bad for power. the cylinders, well it depends if the rings left any mark from sitting on them. honestly id use it if there was some personal value to it. toybuilder Posted March 14, 2005 Share Posted March 14, 2005 I wouldn't use any of the parts from that engine. I don't think that a simple hone job is going to fix that rust. Honing doesn't really remove much material from the cylinder wall. It should be easy to find a better builder engine than that one. Dr. RX Posted March 14, 2005 Share Posted March 14, 2005 Hell, the short block that I have for free looks a little better then that, I don't remember it being that badly pitted, but it's free to whoever wants it.
