1981 GL Wagon with Idle Problems

Recommended Posts

Did a search, found some great stuff on the site.

Over 450k on the clock, new carb and used 50k motor about 100k ago. Carb more recent... anyway,

Wifes car, she still loves it.

It idles at 14 to 16 hundred, then drops to 4 hundred for what reason, I have no clue.

Good compression/spark/ and will pull a 6% grade in fifth no problem... It is just an idle circuit problem.

More data... Recently had a wire harness fire, fixed, but some vac lines may not be perfect. Is there a posted vacuum line schematic anywhere? The one that is supposed to be under the hood is OOC (out of commission). Also, many posts refer to the EGR valve as a possible culprit..location? And since we no longer have a mechanic around, is there a service manual available online anywhere?

Thanks all, your help is appreciated!

The EGR valve is the round thing on the intake manifold behind the carb, sometimes they get stuck open with a chunk of carbon or other debris, you can clean it wih carb spray or get another one from a junkyard, you might want to inspect the idle solenoid on the carb, and make sure its working, adjusted properly, make sure the choke/fast idle is working-pulling off as the car warms up, and check for vacuum leaks, these are the main culprits in idle issues, I don't know about the manual, but i remember seeing some vacuum diagrams on here somewhere, you could always look for a car in the jy with an intact sticker, or check the public library, ours has some pretty decent auto manuals. Hope this helps...

Thanks again for any help here...

I have checked all vacuum lines and connections. Some were far from perfect but now all OK.

Engines idles with setting the stop and Idle screw nicely at 1000 rpm. Here is the rub... With no apparent reason the idle will drop to 450 or so, hang there for a few minutes then ramp up to 1k again. I have spray tested the EGR valve assembly and when applying air to it, idle increases. There are no vacuum lines to it so what could possibly give?

It runs perfectly under load. Is getting good mileage and starts easily. The drop in idle is the question that I hope some subguru has the answer for!

Thanks again,
