According to the specs on Automotive.com, the EPA highway gas mileage is as follows: 95: 7.6 L/100km 96: 8.1 97: 7.8 (a 4% improvement) 98: 7.8 99: 8.1

I highly doubt the auto get better mileage than the manual. My 92 legacy gets about 9 L/100 km on the highway at best. And it seems to be in fine running shape.

March 31, 200521 yr The EPA tests in controlled conditions with the A/C off and the ambient air temperature between 68-86 degrees F. plus the car has no weight, and there is no elevation change in the test. If you just happen to encounter any difference in your daily drive your mileage will be diffrent, usually worse. more info here www.fueleconomy.gov
