Charcoal canister question..

Featured Replies

is it possible for these to get "full" or "backed up" or "gummed up"??? seeing as how it deals with the egr and pc solenoid i thought i would look for one of those in a low mileage spi while i was looking for the solenoids....

It shouldn't, unless somehow you've got raw fuel into it. The charcoal just traps fuel vapors, so they won't vent to atmosphere and can be drawn back into the tank and condensed. I think that's how it was explained to me anyway.

my car doesnt even have one, 88 spfi sedan.

It was removed then ;)

actually purge vapors get drawn into the motor when the purge sol. opens up. the good thing is the solinoids fail open I belive. usually there is no need to replace the canister.

just was curious as the canister is much easier to get to then the solenoids are :) so, are the vapors drawn in at cruising or what? just curious since the light popped on when i pushed the clutch in during 60....

The vapors are drawn in when the engine is warmed up. - So you would not know of a failure until it had reached operating temp. - I assume you pulled the trouble codes to figure out the EVAP problem - don't bother with the canister - the car cannot tell whether it is or is not working - the only thing that will cause the computer to send a trouble code reguarding that system is the electric purge solenoid
