April 19, 200520 yr I'm going to bite the bullet and do the 100 amp GM alternator conversion, and I'm having trouble finding one for a decent price. The link in the USRM goes to one that would cost me at least $150, and NAPA is more expensive than that. I found a couple of alternators at Summitracing.com that look like the same case design, which they call a "GM 10DN". They are rated at 100 amps, and fit a huge number of Chevrolet, Buick, Caddy, etc cars from the 60's through the 80's. Here's a picture of one of them, and I think it looks like the same one that was used in the USRM writeup. Can anybody verify that it's the same design?
April 20, 200520 yr Well, I'd need to see the mounting ears on the other side to agree its a similar alternator. I've found numerous ones with similar mounting ears cloked at 8 and 2, however the width between the 8'oclock pair is different. The P7157 is the closest to perfect I found. The part link on my writeup goes to a $75 alternator (p7157).. *shrugs* Theres a $35 core.. but whatever. Most likely its the same thing. Only way you'll know is to try it out.
April 20, 200520 yr kelly - hit the junkyards down there. Tons of chevy's in alaska. shouldnt be a problem. Get a used one, use it til it goes out (keep the subaru one as a spare) when the used GM alt goes out (if it does) bring that one in as the core for a new one
April 20, 200520 yr Author I just ordered the one from Summit. The one in the link from the USRM, with shipping and core charge, would cost about what I just paid for the alternator plus some other stuff I needed (exhaust wrap for my boat) from Summit. I had thought about picking up a used one, but there's no way to test it in the J-Y so it's a hit-or-miss deal there. I'll find out if this is the right alternator, but it looks like it's the same one. If not, no biggie, I'll fab up some brackets.
