This is the second oil change I have done. Both took 7 quarts of oil. The book says 5.8. Has anyone else experience this? I do let all of the oil drain out before reinstalling the filter and plug, but 1.2 quarts more than what Subaru states in the owner's manual? This is crazy.

Are you filling it the knotch or keeping it between the two lines it is supposed to be between?

At 6 quarts, it's below the first hole on the dipstick. at 6 1/2 quarts, it's right in the middle between the two holes. 7 quarts would bring it up to the top mark. I put in 6 1/2 quarts. It is in the middle of the two holes right now. That makes it almost a quart more than it is supposed to take.

You could possibly have a mis stamped dipstick. I've heard of it happening on other makes. I would stick with 5.8Q. It's a 2005...take it to the dealer and ask them what gives.

That 5.8 could be without a filter change?

 

My truck is supposed to take 12, but if you put 12 in it, it burns off that quart, but if you put 11 in it is fine, and according to what I've heard it's very common on the older Cummins engines...

When I change my oil, I put a quart over what it calls for to compensate for the oil filter. When I check my oil after running it, it's exactly at the F mark.

The BIG problem with overfilling engine oil is frothing. The crankshaft beats the oil into a foam. Since foam is mostly air, the engine is not adequately lubricated. Engine failure quickly ensues.

 

Nedro, this is not normal. It may turn out to be nothong. But, you need an answer to this ASAP!!!

Just a question, how long do you let it sit before you check & crank it? Reason I ask: noticed in my car it takes a good 10 minutes or so for the oil to read properly on the dipstick level. Perhaps if you are looking for an immediate reading, it could not have fully leveled off, or whatever, therefore giving you an incorrect reading. But yeah, filling more than 1 quart of oil more than the manual.... something's not right.
