Hi, I have the 1980 Brat ea71 and am having some problems. It backfires when I try to kick down the RPM's while it's warming up and first starting out on the road. Any suggestions on where to start to fix the backfiring would be appreciated. Thanks Trudy

Bump :) Any suggestions guys, the Brat is in the garage right now waiting for some help !!!!!

Well the most common suggestion is the air injection system.

It injects air into the exhaust to help the cataletic converter work better.

But ive plugged mine and it still backfires and pops so i think it may be something else

Check the reed valve in the air injection system they have a habit of geting a carbon buildup or cracks etc which can cause this

did ea-71's run a cat? l was under the impression they started fitting these with the ea-81, or am l wrong ? Perhaps it's an auto choke problem, does this continue after the car is heated up or only first start-up then disappear, fuel pumps are also a problem, if it's on it's way out they tend to play-up, anyway, l hope this helps. Brats don't belong in garages.

It only backfires while cold. P.S. I own the shop and the tech works for me so that should make it okay to be in the garage Ha Ha . :brow:
