'nother alternator question

Featured Replies

so i've gone through 4 alternators since i got my wagon, and i'm tired of dealing with 'em.

i recently picked up an 80 amp alt. from a volvo and was wondering if anyone has used one, or anything else other than a gm alt.

this will be giong on the '75 so do i do as hondasucks suggests in his write-up ( http://www.ultimatesubaru.org/forum/article.php?a=14 ) as far as the external regulator goes?

i can post pics when i get home so hopeluffy someone can help me figure out how to wire this thing in.

thanks in advance

Hey Mike, what keeps dying in the alternator?

Also, Schucks carries a lifetime warranty one, though as you know I had to replace mine every few years.

Call me if you need help Mike, 778-4708.

Ill ask at work tomorrow about volvo alt's. Ill bet someone knows. If I get a decent answer i will let you know. Also, I have next thursday or friday off from work and can help you fix it if you would like.

Logically, if those are the only two connections on the back of the alternator, the big B+ would be the battery output, and the smaller D+ would have to be field current (ignition signal).

I also called up my buddy who does nothing but volvos and he agrees, if its the mid 80s 80A Volvo240/740 we're talking about (which is what the picture looks like). :)

Hi Mike,

I talked with my coworker today and his answers jive with Raven's. B+ goes to the pos battery, and D+ is the hot with ignition lead.

You dont need a voltage regulator with this setup, it is already in the alternator. Just hook up the two wires, make sure your battery isnt dead, and give it a go. You can pretty much ditch the rest of your old charging system. If you want a voltmeter in the gauge cluster just hook one up to the battery and the ignition so when the car is off so is the meter.

Goodluck,

here's the scoop, was gonna be a lot of fab work to put the volvo one in(no welder), so i decided to go with one of the gm alts i had laying around. not fully in yet, but really close then i just have to deal with the wiring on the ext. regulator
