SPFI block w/ turbo heads q/a

Featured Replies

I'm just buttoning up my SPFI block to the turbo heads..finally for some hi-comp madness!

I notice that the SPFI block doesn't have the separator thing at the back of the engine like the Turbo block does...Also, it appears that there is a threaded hole near the knock sensor that does not go anywhere like it does on the turbo block. On the turbo block it looks like it connects to the separator.

Any ideas what I should do, if anything, about these things?

Oh..and thanks to the USRM for the engine removal instructions. Worked perfectly..

the seperator you're describing is for the PCV and the tube sticking out of the turbo block is for the PCV system. Calebz has a carbed block in his turbowagon and he got around the whole PCV part of it.

Ok..I'm just wondering if I need to tap that out and vent the crankcase like on the turbo block, or if it will be alright to leave it as is..

I figure Subaru must have had a fairly good reason to put that thing on the Turbo block and not the SPFI.

Looks like I may need to fabricate up some sort of catch can or something right? Or just vent the crankcase with some little filters like the cars of the old days?

sorry... no help from me :-p

i'm just replying to say that I have the carbed block too, and thus don't have the PCV provision.

carry on about your normal business

So a couple more answers to your questions:

Nope just leave it as is. It'll be just fine

Just route it so you have it come to a T-fitting and have a little air filter on it

You have made it this far eh?

How did those timeserts work out? Hadn't heard from you since I sent them off.

On my PCV system, the valve itself is plugged off. IIRC, the driver side vents and the passenger side sucks in.

The passenger side is routed to the MAF boot and there is a small filter on the drivers side.

Mine runs like a bat out of hell.. High compression and TD04 for the win!

What boost pressure are you running? What fuel system?

Roni has steves(x35s) old car... Its running its high comp turbo up here in CO and DAMN!!! that thing is FAST.... it hauls... and its running stock boost. future plans are the spider intake and a fancy WRX type RA intercooler.... Noss (blownbimer) has also nuked his wagon and the current plans are to build one of these engines.... I just "happen" to have both an SPFI and Turbo motor in my back yard.:drunk:

Currently running 9psi with a mostly stock fuel system.. No major troubles yet.

Did run into a couple MAF problems since the stock airbox couldn't be retained. Thats handled now.. I think.

Will probably be going over to MS&S after the first of the year

I might be working out a deal to get a fully rebuilt shortblock from an SPFI so I can slap my new OEM gen 3 turbo heads on it after a bit of P-n-Ping. Then I'll see what kind of oversized valves I can get for it and some stiffer valve springs. Bolt it all on with a set of ARP headstuds and throw my set of Delta cams in there and see what she can do. This is plans for the future but with the approval of a loan I hopefully get, it'll be sooner then expected:D
