June 27, 200520 yr I changed my fuel filter to to discover that it was long over due......brown goo seeping out of the old filter. After putting in the new filter it made such a remarkable difference in performance. My concern is that the fuel tank has plenty of goo left in it, unless I do something about it, I will be changing my fuel filter every 1,000 miles. I would like to avoid having to remove the fuel tank for a cleaning......what additives work best for cleaning a tank. Recommendations???? Thanks....
June 27, 200520 yr Hi, Don't be so afraid because of fuel filter. Just think that the cantity of mud in your filter was stopped in the filter in time. About me check the filter and change it only when the service interval is fullfilled, and in case of emergency.

My EA81 has a front and rear filter. If you have two then you'd better think about giving that second one a quick change... I'd keep an eye on the filter and see just how fast they are getting dirty before I'd mess with cleaning a tank... Good Luck, Glenn 82 SubaruHummer 01 Forester
June 27, 200520 yr Thanks...........where would the front filter be located??? An EA81 (early 80's brat, hatch, wagon...) will have a filter next to the fuel pump in the back ( just forward of the tank). The will also have one under the hood.--My Hatch's was attached the the firewall on the drivers side. What car are we talking about?
June 27, 200520 yr i'd continue to change it at least at recommended intervals, possibly more often. you should be fine. run some fuel injector cleaner through it. i like to run multiple bottles per tank, say two.
June 27, 200520 yr First change the first one because it should be full of Mud, then change tha other one under the hood. Don't be angry because it's not a big problem . Change all filters in regulary intervallum. the best should be to take out your tank and clean it...
June 27, 200520 yr dont forget ea81 also has a drain plug on the gas tank! got this 83 gl-10. replaced the dead fuel pump tp get no fuel. drained the gas out the drain plug and blew out the lines, first from the drain plug and then the feul lines under the hood and at the pump make sure the gas cap is on so gas dont shoot out the side of the car. be careful and do outside as this will cause a lot of fuel vapor atomization and can be potentially EXPLOSIVE, s gasoline fog will be produced, just like a carburetor you know me, i made sure to go outside(large pole barn) to smoke cigarettes, as siphoning gas and smoking is one thing, but i know an empty tank full of vapor is another thing

June 28, 200520 yr i just blew it all out. this car had 10 year old gas with fresh gas mixed in. if anything let it sit overnite with fuel injector cleaner or the like. drive it around to slosh it around
