  1. Curious what the difference is between the models? It looks like there were 79 brats with dual headlights and some with four.....is that the only difference between these models. Did one come later in the year....which is more desirable? thx!
  2. Thanks Biffany, I might take you up on that offer. Anyone out there actually done this....added AC to a brat with no factory ac? I'm in charleston SC and its a must! thx!
  3. Is it possible to install AC in a 79 brat? If so....how much and how difficult is it? Thanks!
  4. thx...would that likely include the rear adjustment bolt under the back seat?
  5. does the 89 still have the height adjustment or was that taken away? thx
  6. Any thoughts on 89 hatchback....thinking about buying one. I've owned a '80 wagon, 84 hatch, and a 85 wagon in the past.....but don't know anything about the '89 HB....looks similar to the 84 hatch I had...any changes? thx
  7. Need to purchase a Carb Repair Kit. Any suggestions on where to purchase one. Its a Hitachi Carb for an 84 gl 4x4 non-california. thanks
  8. Thanks......I do have a voltmeter, but am not too familier with how to properly use it. How should I go about hooking it up to test the fuel pump. If the fuel pump is the source of my problems, where should I purchase one? Thanks...........
  9. Delayed Bump...........thanks for any suggestions.
  10. I believe I have the same problem. Can drive for an hour and all is fine, then turn off the car, restart, then random surging (the car will loose RPMs partly or completely, unless I pump the gas). I though it was a fuel problem, but may be electrical, which you are hinting at. Could it be the Fuel Pump Control Unit that has an odd short causing it to shut down the fuel pump? Its a mystery to me, leaving me with an undrivable car. Let me know if you find a solution.....I'll do the same. Good luck.
  11. Thanks for the input. The carb is less than a year old. The car sat for a long time, so I had to replace some critical parts. I did a search and found similiar symptoms due to a faulty Fuel Pump Control Unit. I'm not looking at the fuel pump as a problem because they seem to outlast the engines. Anyone know anything about FPCU's or any suggestions on where to look?
  12. Is there a good way to test this before I dismantle my carb and buy a kit? Thanks........
  13. What's the best way to fix a sticking float needle valve? I Seafoam the carb requently. Or should I purchase one? Where is it located? Thanks....
  14. First things first......check for vacuum leaks. The easiest way to do this is to take the air filter lid off, while running, take a rag and put it over and cover the opening to the carb.....use both hands and try to cover it completely so it is completely sealed.....listen to the idle....if the idle increases when you do this = you have a vac leak. If your car is not idling well enough to even try this, adjust the idle up using the idle screw until it settles to a comfortable, unshaky idle. Another thing......how long has it been since the fuel filter/separator was changed. Actually, before your try any of this, Seafoam the carb to clear out any grit.
  15. What was the problem you had that was fixed when you installed the new fuel fitlers?
  16. Ok here goes......I driving down the road rpms at 3k. all of a sudden they drop to zero.....if I don't do anything, the car dies......if I quickly pump the gas, the car "catches" and returns to the 3k rpms. This happens at random.....maybe every half hour or so of driving. And this didn't happen six months ago. I've deduced that it is a fuel delivery problem, but more precisely crap in the gas tank. So I drained the gas tank, flushed it, replaced both fuel filters, put one gallon of gas in the tank with a whole can of SeaFoam. Ran it hard to brake up any crap in the fuel lines......still has the same problem. I 'm at a loss? Can't figure it out. I've adjusted the air/fuel mix to specs. Am I it right to assume its a fuel problem? Suggestions? Thanks......
  17. Sure its a knock and not a ping? Timing advanced too far, or fuel grade too low, or fuel filters clogged? Just checking.......
  18. BUMP..... Hard start in the morning due to choke not fully closing. Before I start it, I open the air filter lid and check the position of the choke plate to make sure its closed. Its not all the way closed.....so I try to push it closed....it won't close all the way....not because its stuck, but because it looks like the choke plate is too big and will not physicaly close all the way....I know its not right because I have another older carb sitting around and the plate on this one does close all the way (meaning the plate is sitting completely flat....unlike my current one which closes only to about 15 degrees from flat). Could I have the incorrect choke plate installed on my hitachi carb? If so, what can I do about it apart from buying a new carb....which is silly being that the carb is not even a year old. Or is there a way to adjust the plate to make it fit right so it will close properly. Thanks......
  19. Other past problems were do to other issues (vac. leak), this is a new problem that has to do with this new carb.

  21. Found a bit (not much....sorta dried) oil on my number 4 plug. So what does this mean? Thanks
  22. Yea, but once drained, what do you do to "flush" it? Thanks....
  23. For over a year know since I bought my subi, I've been struggling with problems. I've changed the alt, disty, carb, vac. hoses, made alot of adjustments, time and money....only to discover that the root to all my problems has been two things: sludge in the gas tank (clogged fuel fitlers), and too much air in the fuel/air mixture.......all this leading to fuel starvation to my car which has caused rough idle, disty/rmps "skipping", poor gas milage, and frustration. Alas, she's running well, though I still need to clean out the fuel tank.....not sure of the best way to accomplish this, apart from constantly changing my 2 fuel fitlers. Anyone got suggestions?
