Ok, so according to the info listed on the USMB here: http://www.ultimatesubaru.org/80s/specs/mechanical/engine-specs.html The 96 EJ25 is 155hp/155t

According to http://www.cars101.com/subaru_legacy_archive95_97.html the 96 EJ25 is 155hp/140t, and the 97 EJ25 is 165hp/162t.

Also have discovered that MSN Autos claims 155hp/155t for the 96.

 

So, what is correct, and if there really is a difference in power between the 96 and 97 model years, what changed to make the difference? Also, could this difference or change be why the 96 EJ25 doesn't seem to have the Head Gasket problems?

Not an expert here, but since I have a 96GT I've tried to find out the differences too. From searching here and there, I think the major difference is the 96 2.5 has hydraulic lifters and in 97 they changed to solid ones. Not sure what HP and Torque figures are correct for 96, but the changes made did increase both for 97. Premium fuel was also not required for the MY 97 forward.

Pistons are different too. Rick could tell you exactly how and what years each one changed.

All I really know is that the higher HP partly came from shorter skirted pistons in order to get a longer stroke. And that there are at least 8 styles when I have to put away cleaned ones! Some of the differences are so small you'd have to have a micrometer (or a mind like Rick's) to see the difference.

 

Yes, the '96 has hydraulic lifters and they seem to be more reliable.
