Rear Main Seal Question

Featured Replies

:-\ Please help. I just picked up a rear seal for EA81 '83 dl. It was about twice the size of the front seal, which I have had but have not installed. I thought I heard they were both the same. The parts guy (not a Subaru parts dept) thought they were the same on 4WD but different on FWD vehicles like mine. There was an atmosphere of "I really don't know" about the whole thing.

I want to have the right parts before heading into my clutch job weekend. This rear seal is approx 3 " in diameter and the front seal was maybe 1 1/2.

don't know about yours, but every rear main seal i've replaced is bigger than the front crank seal.

truth brutha :drunk:

If they can be replaced without removal of the crankshaft, then the rear will be larger than the front because it has to fit over the flywheel-mount flange, whereas the front need only fit over the crank snout.

Hey Doc,

what you have is the correct seals to do the job, the rear is bigger than the front and for the reason Northwet mentions so you are right to proceed with the upcomming job, have fun.
